Back to Black

Saturday, August 19th, 2017

What goes through your mind when you see accessories or furniture in black? This hue is often associated with mystery, authority, strength, power, and even fear. Black is formidable in many aspects especially since, to begin with, it is the presence of all colors.

But don’t think of black as something that denotes negativity, emptiness, gloom, grief or darkness. Black represents so many beautiful aspects of life such as sophistication, being sexy, and authority. This is why black is also used to denote other meanings such as a formal event (black tie event), pitch black (zero visibility), black belt (martial arts expert level), or black box (an airplane apparatus).

Other words that are associated with black include soot, raven, charcoal, lampblack, jet, ebony, ink, obsidian, midnight, sable, and onyx.

The Color Black and Your Mood

Black – just like other colors – can easily affect the mind and the body. It can boost confidence in one’s appearance when used correctly.

Black, admit it, is visually weighty, hence, it is very strong. Black can be overwhelming if you’re not careful when using it.

Black is an effective communication tool. Just look at how powerful black and white photographs are compared to the colored ones.

Black provides comfort and warmth or it can also cause feelings of animosity.

When Interior Design Is Mainly Black

When using black on interior design, be ready to surrender to this powerful hue. It is luminary, hence, the black candelabra will evoke more powerful emotions than the usual silver ones. Black can also reduce space which is why it is used mostly in large spaces that need to be tamed. When you have a small space, though, you might want to rethink about using black on your ceilings and walls.

When investing in black furniture, make sure that you have time to maintain it as it can show scratches and dust more visibly compared to all other colors.

Or black can be used to cap an otherwise bright, neutral, bordering boring look. The Flexsteel Dining Room Round Dining Table W1537-833 is the right contrast to this wide, open space.

Black + One Other Hue

There are many colors that can be combined with black. Would you want to know which one you need to use and where?

First off, the classic black and white. There you have it – it’s a classic combination that depicts elegance and dependability. Black and white spaces are quite popular these days which means many homes use this color mixture.

If you want to venture into something more exciting and unique, then you can hook up the color black with another striking color. An example is navy blue.

Black and navy blue look luxurious together. This pair will give your space a posh appeal especially when you add gray accents.

Yellow and black, on the other hand, is a dynamic fusion that is also elegant, stylish, and non-boring. Prepare to scatter your vision throughout a room with this color mixture.

For the more daring bunch, you can go for orange and black. This marriage of two colorful colors will give you a warm and cozy ambiance. Use orange accents or vice versa, either way, you’re sure to have an exciting home.

Silver and black have a tendency to make the room seem gloomy. To counter this effect, you can liven up your space by adding flowers and colorful accessories.

To unleash the lovely lady in you, use pink and black. This color combo is a huge favorite among female teenagers and even ladies who want to show their softer, more feminine side. For a more exciting fusion than this yet not straying from the look that says you’re a woman, you can always go for red and black.

Red and black screams strength and power. Use the latter as the effective background and red as the color for the furnishings.

Black is probably the most misunderstood color in the whole, wide world. It is so bold that many people find it intimidating. It can evoke dark feelings. This is not a common go-to color in terms of home décor or interior design. Most homes with many family members do not believe that this is the color to use to induce bonding and harmony.

Black is classy, though. It is sophisticated in so many ways yet it is not for the amateur to handle. This is the color to use when you want to create fashionable and chic color schemes for a work space, even a kitchen. As long as you use it the right way, you will see how black can help you tell a wonderful story. It can even be paired with any color to achieve harmony.

Black Furniture

Black is often a complementary color. This is one of its finest advantages. So, whether you are planning to decorate the bedroom or the living room, black furniture can powerfully change the dimension in that room.

A beautiful black sofa and any coffee table is a pair that will provide a stunning contrast especially when placed on a bright-colored backdrop like powder yellow. Furniture is often the focal point of a design. For instance, adding a vase of colorful, fresh roses atop a hardwood tabletop plus a lush carpet below will surely be an ambience that’s worth noticing.

Black Spells Artistic

Black is a major enhancer of architectural structures. This is a color that adds an artistic flair so go ahead and paint the trim, molding or doors with black. Use green or aqua blue on walls to contrast with a calming effect. Use high gloss paint on concrete floors or any old wood furniture.

Use black in accessories and drapes to achieve cohesion.

Black Walls

Black may seem scary or even tricky but you must stop fearing this color if you want to use it effectively in your home. One can always use a change of color on your walls. Pick one wall as a focal wall then design it with horizontal or vertical stripes. You can also use marigold or auburn as foundations or simply choose any patterned wallpaper with hints of black on it.

Damask or paisley prints in black and white will also add a different kind of appeal in your home.

Black Accessories

Accessories are your best friends when you are out to pick a color scheme. When you use two solid colors, it is wise to incorporate black in the room. Use it on accent pieces such as clocks, vases, rugs or photo frames. These should add a cool yet classy vibe that would never compete with the overall design.

Always think of black as a solution when you’re on the edge. A room that is aching for a makeover would do well to have black.

Black Trim

Black may have a contradictory character but its use on the finishing touches of any room could provide the needed highlight. This is why black is often used on vaulted ceiling beams. This is a color that can effectively absorb light, thus, make sure that you use it with caution.

Black may appear unhappy or negative but if you use it correctly, it could also look trendy. Use it on window frames not just the exposed ceiling beams. Highlight other beautiful architectural details of your home. You could use high-gloss or lower sheen for the trimming.

Black is especially beautiful on windows and door casings, mantels and pillars. It is also perfect on the crown molding and just about any other architectural elements that outline a room.

Many people are excited with colors but only a few are willing to go yonder and leave their comfort zones. Color is an integral part of any space. It is a crucial part of interior design, practically a part of one’s everyday life. Even a simple birthday cake can have lots of colors.

Black is a totally different story altogether. Black conveys different emotions. It can be contemporary, it can be traditional, it can be many things. Black can take inspiration from concrete industrial spaces or it can be as emotional as the Gothic theme.

Don’t think that black is just Gothic, though. It is dramatic, it is bold, it can be literally anything. Black can be paired with any color depending on what feeling or theme you are trying to achieve.

Black can be a tad scarier to handle especially when it comes to design purposes. It is sophisticated but it is a non-color but it can be effectively used to enhance any space. Having all neutrals in a space means there isn’t one thing to ground the eyes so black comes in handy at this point. You can use it as an anchor, for instance, when you purchase a black bed and place it in a mainly neutral room.

Black and Your Feelings

Your color choice for your home can be very subjective. This can be dependent on what you are feeling at the moment or what you are trying to convey through your design.

Black and white are base colors that you can use. This can be in your sheer attempt to be dramatic, bold and sophisticated all at the same time while not forgetting the privacy in your space.

Going through the design process, you would often subject yourself through a series of questions regarding the creation of a functional yet still beautiful space. If you want to achieve an airy and light feeling, then you have to think of elements that are not dark, heavy and compact.

Black means taking a risk because, eventually, it means never going out of style and being classy.

Black and Fashion

Did you know that what is in in the fashion industry also reflects in the world of interior design? Black is a universal hue that can be in concert with other hues. It can effortlessly provide crispness, weight, relief, definition and, yes, style.

In essence, every room is in need of a touch a black. It can add just the right amount of drama, even life to a boring room. There is no need to repeat black throughout the room. It is best used as a bold accent like a statement wall or an interesting ceiling.

There is no gray area when it comes to the use of black in interior design. Either you use a lot of it or just use a touch. Black trimming means you have effectively restrained the color while still contributing to the beauty of your interiors. Black trim on your windows can give a refreshing crispness to the room. It will make the windows pop and provide a cohesive look.

Black can keep white from being boring or stark. Without this non-color, the design would be ineffective. Black and white floors (usually checks) are the standard black and white duo. This design has been considered haute for centuries. To add a modern look, just place a colorful statement wall.

Black isn’t just the absorption of all colors, it is also good to be married with any color. There isn’t a color scheme in the world that would not fit this hue. Even purple – an often choosy color – is effectively complemented by black so, go ahead and use it to your heart’s content.

Making Black and Brown Non-Gloomy

Monday, August 1st, 2016

The marriage of black and brown in this pretty ensemble is difficult to ignore. This piece comes from FFDM's Viniterra Collection.

The marriage of black and brown in this pretty ensemble is difficult to ignore. This piece comes from FFDM’s Viniterra Collection.

Black and brown may both be classified as dark colors but they are actually on opposite sides of a neutral palette. Black may be brash or bold while brown can be boring if not used properly. You may not love the idea of using any of these two colors but it goes without saying that they have their own special place in interior design. There are many reasons that black and brown can also work in your home; here are some –

Black Is the Star

Black is a color that will never miss in terms of style, not that it can never go wrong but it would be impossible not to see the mistake.

A feature wall can be painted black. If you do that, any stuff that you place by it would surely be highlighted. This wall could also instantly magnetize the attention of visitors. Pick black if you are ready to make a huge statement or are in need of a focal point in a huge space.

Brown by the Sidelines

Unlike black, this color doesn’t beg for attention. This is why it is an excellent choice for any room that’s kept busy by patterns. This is the color that you should turn to if you want a more restful and cohesive look.

A brown sofa, though right in the middle of the room, might not be the one that you would instantly notice in a living room. It is only subtly beautiful so other design elements can be featured. Pick brown for bigger furniture pieces that won’t necessarily steal the show.

Black With Neutrals

The audaciousness of black may be strong for other colors to take especially when you use a lot, however, it can be mixed with neutrals. Black can highlight undertones adding drama, even life. When you are working with a neutral palette, all you have to do is add a dash of brown. Featuring black will spell the difference between drab and fab.

Brown + Other Colors

One of the strengths of brown is its power to relate to different hues. Brown is often a mix of colors but just with a tad more orange or red for a warmer look. This color works on an eclectic palette since it can connect with other hues.

Black can work with colors but brown is always the safer bet.

Black + Patterns

The crisp look of black makes it a wonderful choice for prints and patterns. It is especially awesome with bold geometric patterns complete with strong angles.

Brown + Patterns

Brown is better when used with soft patterns and organic curves. It also works with a lot of light and white. Branch motifs and leaves are also amazing partners for this color.

Brown Spells Texture

Brown looks great in rich textures and vice versa. The softness of brown emphasizes more on texture while black, more often than not, visually overpowers it. Pick brown for elements such as a faux-fur blanket, a hide rug, or shearling-style pillows.

You could also never go wrong with a brown leather sofa. Find a piece that’s a tan or chocolate brown shade so it would give the space a touch of elegance.

Black with Black Electronic

There are traditional themes that house modern elements. More often than not, these are electronics such as the TV. A huge flat screen TV may not automatically fit any theme. Adding glossy black design elements is necessary if you want it to harmonize everything. A lacquered chair or a side table should do the trick.

The kitchen is another room in your home where black accents would also look nice. These are those small, often unnoticeable areas such as a countertop, pendant light or dishwasher control knobs.
