When it comes to organization and decluttering, it would seem that people tend to look for solutions and probable systems to use when things have gotten completely out of hand. There are ways to make your decluttering efforts easier, here are eight techniques –
Put on Labels
You have probably seen a lot of DIY labeling tips online but most of these aren’t actually necessary. There are moments, though, when it can make things easier for you. An example is when you have to store different spices on a rack or a drawer. Putting labels on the lids will help you in easily taking the right spice off the rack.
No need to hunt for jars of different spices anymore. A Sharpie and a roll of masking tape should make do as your labeling materials. You can also put dates on your labels so that you’ll know which leftovers to take first.
Buy Sorters
‘Know all those small stuff such as medications, spare light bulbs and craft items? These are the pieces that tend to clutter spaces. But every household has its own share of tiny stuff but it’s up to you to organize these little things so that they don’t cause chaotic drawers and closets.
Find boxes to house and categorize these tiny things. Or find sorters in craft shops to finally organize the growing clutter.
Organize Your Drawers
The drawer is yet another place that causes a lot of clutter problems in a home. You can begin by creating drawer organizers where the small items are being stored. So go ahead and organize your junk drawers, kitchen drawers, entryway and desk drawers.
If you’re just about to purchase organizers, don’t forget to measure the units so that you will take home the right piece.
Establish A Landing Zone
Do you notice how things easily get cluttered on the entryway? It’s because, this is the spot where you seem to stash your stuff when you arrive home. Here, you will see shoes, coats, bags, and even paper bills so roll up those sleeves and be ready to organize them.
A shelf and a bench would do wonders in this area. Add some trays also where you can put extra coins, keys, and other small stuff.
Have a Giveaway Box or Bag
‘Know all those things that you stored, and when you finally got to them, you realized that you’ve held on to them for no reason at all? These are the things that you can give away for charity.
Have a big box or a bag become the dedicated spot where you can put the stuff that you would be willing to give away. Check also all of your storage units because there could be other stuff there that you think you still need but no longer do.
Create a Filing System
Opt to enroll in an electronic billing system. And as you sign up for paperless bills on all your accounts, you can also begin to file those that do not offer this system.
Some labeled folders are a step up when it comes to categorizing and eventually organizing your paper clutter. Tax papers go together; as for the home repair papers and car payment records, they, too, should be properly filed.
If you’re thinking that you don’t have a lot of paper clutter to merit buying a filing cabinet, then you can just invest in some file boxes in the meantime.
Use Wall Mounts
Wall mounting saves you a lot of floor space. Just imagine all the things that you can vertically store (or display) – from your TV to garage tools, and even wall art.

There Internet is recently bombarded with a trend called organization porn. This has nothing to do with pornography or anything that is lascivious in nature. This is actually something appealing since it requires organization skills and well-curated art pieces that are used as everyday items. A gorgeously minimalist living room is an example of a well-organized space.
So what are the general reasons why you might not be able to clean up the mess in your home? Many homeowners stress over these things and, perhaps, there is a solution for these common woes –
There is simply too much clutter. As everyone goes through life, we tend to pick up objects that are not necessarily needful. For example, the Christmas balls that were used two years ago (because you wanted to have a different-colored tree last Christmas) are now dumped in the attic. They’re there together with your extra waffle iron and blow dryer.
To solve this dilemma, stop being attached to material stuff. If you are keeping them for sentimental reasons, then just take a photograph then file the photographs and do not hoard the stuff. Give away the stuff that other people could still use.
You don’t have ample time to clean up. You might think that this is a pretty valid reason to have a less than ideal home but it is not. While it may take a lot of time to organize just a single room, the simple solution is always to take it one day at a time.
You don’t have to finish the task that same day. If the room has accumulated a lot of unused stuff over the last months, then you logically should not expect to have it cleaned up in just a few hours.
Don’t even be tempted to give up.
You don’t know what clean feels anymore. Perhaps you have spent so many months or years slipping into the bad habit of not cleaning up. The sad result is that your house is no longer clean and presentable. You could, again, be tempted to just leave the clothes on the floor or to have the coat rack take on more than it could bear – but just don’t.
To solve this never-ending loop of bad habits, remember that a clean home is tantamount to being physically and mentally healthy. So spend enough time to keep your home clean all the time.
A Positive Effect
It has been studied that people who have clean homes tend to be healthier than people who have unorganized habitats. Associate professor Nicole R. Keith, Ph.D. of Indiana University pointed out the health risks that can be prevented with a clean home. Imagine not having to worry too much about heart disease since you live in a clean home.
Another study that was published in 2010 in a scientific journal also proved the connection between depression and a dirty home. According to the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, women who lived in cluttered homes showed higher levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.
The Princeton University also came up with its own study wherein the visual cortex was found to be overwhelmed by irrelevant objects. When this happens, it is observed that the subjects became less focused and had a shorter attention span.
Another amazing effect of decluttering is that people with clean homes tend to choose healthier lifestyles. Since clutter tends to stress the brain, it has been observed that people resort to stress-eating when they are placed in an equally stressful environment.
Sleeping better and being more productive are also other benefits that you can expect from keeping your home clean. If from now on, you would want to stay in shape, then you have to create a list of goals to keep you motivated. Plan your cleanup regimen and set realistic goals.

Cleaning up mess is not – you must admit it – the easiest and most fun thing to do. Yet everyone loves a clutter-free space so you also know that it is something that you have to do one way or another. Finding the energy and time to do the project, though, is a totally different topic all together.
So what could you do to hasten decluttering so you can enjoy its benefits soon?
Match and Toss
Do you have a pile of Tupperware containers inside your cupboards? This is the time to pull them all out and to start matching the lids to their respective containers. Check for other items inside the dishwasher as well. Store the matched containers and lids and give away any excess pieces that no longer fit into the cupboards.
Stack the matched pieces neatly then go back to the containers that do not have lids. Have those pieces recycled.
Unload ‘Em
Your next 10-minute decluttering project is to dig into the fridge and look for those messy condiments which have been stuck there. These are those spices and condiments which you did not like but ended up storing anyway.
It’s time to unload the fridge and to let go of these bottles. For those that you decide to keep, just wipe the wipe the bottle bottoms with a wet sponge before you put them back in. If you have extra time, group the bottles according to taste – the sweet ones go together while the spicy ones have their own space inside your refrigerator.
Check the Utensils
Your third project is to check out the utensils in your kitchen. Do you use each item daily? Or are most just stored there and remain unused for many months now?
See if you really need all 15 of your spatulas or turners. If not – and frankly you really need one or two – then dispose of the others. If there are utensils that you want to still keep due to sentimental value, then just store them in a different bin. That spot near your stove should be reserved for the ones that you regularly use for cooking.
Oh, the Pen Mug
Yes. That mug where you store all of your pencils and pens. Check if all of your pens still have inks. And for those that are lying around in the kitchen, the dining room, or even the living room, it’s time to scoop them all up and place them inside that mug.
That mug should be their only home when they are not in use. If you have tons of pens, then you might want to give away or donate some of them. There are various non-profit organizations that would be more than happy to receive your lovely pens.
Organize the Socks
Now open your drawers and check out how the socks are stored. Pull out each pair, match the unmarried pieces and inspect each for holes and damages. Fold the matched pieces then return them in your drawer.
Before you decide to throw the unmatched pieces, try checking for their partners in your laundry area. Once you confirm that some do not have mates, then just put these pieces to your recycling bin. Once you have a mount, you can then find a textile recycler in your area where you can donate them.
Organize Shower and Laundry Supplies
Check your shower area then pull out all bottles of shampoos, shower gels, and such. Those that you use daily need to go to your shower caddy. The other bottles that are used less frequently can be stored in a drawer or a bathroom cabinet.
Give away the products or throw away the contents and have the bottles recycled. While you may think that you’re wasting resources, think again. Instead of taking up valuable space in your cabinet, just let them go.
Do the same with your laundry detergents and stain removers.

Some people have admitted to hoarding; some keep denying their obsession. Hoarding is characterized by someone having a hard time parting with possessions. Such a behavior can have a harmful effect on the physical, emotional, financial and social life of the sufferer.
Well, we’re not here to discuss about a psychological disorder, this is not the site for that. You also won’t read about symptoms leading to hoarding. Let’s just discuss how you can keep your home clean and clear from stuff that you don’t really need.
The basic guidelines include the following –
Under Two Years
The guideline to not becoming a hoarder is to let go of things that don’t have any sentimental value to you. Or, if you have not used the item for more than two years, then you know that it’s really time to let it go.
At times, these items could not mean anything at all. It might be as ordinary as empty butter containers in your cupboard. These may have been intended, originally, to become storage containers but they just ended up taking space. If this is the case, then it’s time to throw them away. Allow other people to recycle them and turn them into something more useful.
Minimalist Clothing
What about those clothes that you have kept for a long time?
Clean up your wardrobe by, first, removing all your clothes from the closet. Do you see any empty hangers? Set them aside then start sorting your stuff into three boxes – keep, donate or trash. Take a careful look at your keep box. Take a second time to sort through it again. You will observe that there is more clothing there that can be classified under the donate box.
Take out the box that’s labeled trash.
Keep Photographs and Sentiments
Of course, there are a lot of items that were given to you by your loved ones. This does not mean that you should flood your home with items that you no longer use. If these items are sentimental to you, then have them displayed. If the collection has been hidden all the while inside the cupboard, then it was time for it to go a long time ago.
Don’t fear the feeling of letting go. This is letting go of your kids’ clothes when they’re already adults. The secret to having a clutter-free home is to admit that you need to let go of some stuff. You can take photographs of these sentimental items instead and have them kept in an organized container.
Recognize Commonly Hoarded Items
It is also important to recognize the items that are commonly hoarded. These are papers (especially old newspapers), clothing, plastic bags, car parts, tools, bolts, nuts, screws, electronic equipment, and building materials.
Old furniture should also be discarded and replaced with sturdier ones.
As soon as you identify your hoarded stuff, then it’s time to declutter. Find them one by one then label every single one of them. Create homes for these items and ensure that they are always returned to their rightful places.
Horizontal surfaces must be kept clean at all times. Remember that flat surfaces can easily gather dust. Keep your paper files to a bare minimum. In your kitchen, be sure to label pantry items in order to save time in finding ingredients.
Decluttering Takes Time
Admit to yourself that you have to begin slowly. Don’t go through all your stuff in one day then have a mound of them dumped the following day. Doing so could lead to negative feelings such as anxiety and regret. Instead, go through one small space or collection at a time.
Keep yourself from saying, “I’ll put this aside for now”. Get things done and do them now. Don’t trick yourself. In place of this, you can try framing only the best item or two from your collection. You can then consign, recycle or donate the rest of the pieces.

As you moved into your new home, isn’t it your first desire to create your personal stamp on the new space? But if you are buying a pre-loved home, then the finishes, paint colors and fixtures have all been chosen according to the previous owner’s preference.
Here are some guidelines that you can follow to personalize your home –
A Painted Front Door
One good way to make your home look and feel like you is to paint it. This has far less obligation than when you have to repaint your entire home.
When you’re out to choose the paint color, consider if you would also like to update the hardware such as the locks. Of course, if you are buying a house with existing locks, it is always a great idea to change them.
Personalize with Photos
It’s time to get some of your favorite pictures up on your walls. This is a great and effective way to feel at home right away. So never put off this project. Hang those beautiful family pictures or those travel photos that you have long kept.
Swap for a New Kitchen Faucet
One of the most used things inside a home is the faucet. See if you could swap the old kitchen faucet for a newer, sleeker one. This may seem like a menial task but it is something that can have a huge impact on the overall look of your kitchen (or bathroom).
Just make sure that you coordinate with every existing hardware; or you would be left with an unbalanced room design.
Paint the Walls
It can be a daunting task to pick colors that you will use for the entire house. Don’t go through this difficult phase, save yourself some trouble and just paint a wall or two.
Painting the walls will make you be able to determine the theme or palette that you will use for your entire home.
Bring In Mother Nature
One of the best and most effortless ways to personalize your home is to bring in fresh flowers or potted plants. A room will definitely look a lot friendlier with a touch of nature in a vase or a pot.
Wallpaper ‘Em
If you are in for a bigger project, then you can buy a set of wallpapers. This is also a time-tested way of altering the look inside your home. Put your personal stamp by wallpapering. Use bold patterns if you dare to do so. Neutrals and simpler patterns are for the simpler people.
Clean Up
Use great-smelling products to make your home more appealing. Have a familiar scent, one that you would soon associate with your home.
It also pays to keep clutter from becoming a huge mound. Buy cabinets and drawers where you can store stuff that you don’t use at the moment.
Make it a point to designate a place for your keys and other small items. Have a row of hooks lined up for the special purpose of holding your keys.
Stairs and Window Treatments
The stairs needn’t be boring parts of your home. Paint it white then add shades to the treads. Install a runner if you have a carpeted staircase. Place a runner that is in the color that you most love. A fluffy carpet is great especially for areas with less foot traffic.
You can also upgrade the window treatments. You can go for tailored textured bamboo, Roman blinds, or the basic roller shades. Create a layered look using curtains. Find a window treatment that describes you best. Choose the same fabric for your curtains or draperies so you’ll have a more consistent look on the outside.

Starting anew whether your family is moving or remodeling is a huge undertaking. Expect mess everywhere but once you’ve settled, you should make minimal to zero waste as your home’s new goal. Of course, an endeavor of such magnitude does sound too good to be true, indeed, it is an ambitious take on life. Through persistence, though, your entire home can have a low-consumption kind of living.
Here are some tips that can help you reduce waste in your home –
Bulk Buying
Carryout containers and packaged foods are a huge source of non-recyclable plastic garbage. Just think about those wrappers, chip bags, cartons, and trays – every little one of such packages are made or mixed with plastics which are disposed in landfills.
Cooking at home is a great solution as is eating fresh produce. Purchase vegetables and fruits, and buying other stuff in bulk will help you veer away from those small plastic containers and packages. Buying fresh helps you cut your salt, preservative and artificial dye consumption.
A lot of cosmetic brands also sell their products in bulk in many health stores. Seek such discounts to eliminate the use of plastic in your home. Simplify also the use of cleaning supplies so that you will have a significant reduction of plastic spray bottle garbage.
Be a Neat Freak
Okay, that’s going a tad overboard but reducing the amount of surface where garbage may accumulate could also minimize the amount of garbage and clutter in your home. To effectively implement this, make sure that you have cabinets and other storage units where you will place only the needful stuff.
Don’t collect things that you don’t need. Keeping stuff for sentimental reasons is modified hoarding. Take a picture of that thing which you hold dear then let go. You can also donate unused stuff on a regular basis. Have a giveaway box set up in the attic or basement. Collecting stuff that you don’t use everyday ends up as a pile of garbage inside drawers and closets.
If giving your stuff away is not your style, then find ways that you can sell some of your things. You can even make more money this way.
Shop for Need
Don’t shop. Period.
More often than not, people shop even when they don’t have a need to. If you will be fully honest with yourself, most of your purchases are unnecessary, right?
Shopping for leisure presents the danger of accumulating stuff that you don’t really need. So, yeah, there’s no need to buy that cute outfit just because it matches your Prada bag. Have your house thank you for owning less stuff.
Clean Up
Hold a general cleaning activity on weekends. Make it a fun activity where family members chat and laugh during the cleanup. Have some lemonade and brownies to pep everyone up.
Let go also of the just in case attitude where you keep things, well, just in case you’d need them. If you truly assess all the stuff that you are currently keeping, you would be surprised how many have just been stored for many years.
If you are unsure about giving away or selling some of your stuff, then place them inside a plastic container. Should months pass and that plastic still remains intact, then you’d know by then that it’s time to let go.
Another way of cleaning up your home is to acquire a new perspective in life. Try visiting a homeless shelter and spend some time with someone who has been deprived of the blessings that you take for granted. Doing this will make you realize that having less is actually more; you will then be ready to let go of things that don’t really matter.

Every homeowner knows that there are accessories that can complete a home and there is also clutter. There are pieces that can attract just the wrong kind of attention. These are your visual clutters which can detract instead of add to a home’s magnificence.
You might not have known it but there are accessories in your home that you actually can do without –
Multiple Framed Photos
Have you ever given the walls of your home a second look lately? More often than not, there are mismatched frames that are hung on many walls or are seated on tables. These are those little, cheaply-made photo frames that are so distracting.
Of course, no one’s saying that your family pictures are not important. For most reasons, you are framing them because of sentimental reasons. But instead of cramming all of your family’s vacation photographs, choose the ones that are most memorable, put them in frames that are a lot nicer then display them with a purpose this time.
Create a gallery on one wall or follow what’s already been done in many stylish homes – lining up your staircase with them. It would also be nice to see a console table that is topped with just two or three tastefully chosen framed photographs.
You might ask what you could do with the rest of the frames…well, put them in a donation box (it’s all for a good cause).
Used-to-be-Stylish-Curtains
Did you know that not all rooms need curtains and drapes? There are also so many reasons why you can do without them.
First, it would be tragic to cover beautiful windows of any home. Original woodwork, French windows, and other such beauties would be wrong to cover with thick curtains. Also, if you live in an area right by the woods, then there are definitely rooms in your home that offer a good view of the greenery outside. See those rooms that do not require privacy so you can say goodbye to unnecessary curtains.
Another thing is, have you checked the colors of your curtains recently? Have they been faded by the sun? Are the prints already old fashioned? Or could it be because the curtains are too short for your tall windows?
If any of these rings true, then you might want to experiment with a zero curtain look for awhile. Who knows, you might even enjoy the view more than those times when the windows were all covered up. Should you ever decide to cover the windows up again, try some shutters or bamboo shades for a change.
Plastic Flower Arrangements
There can never be a thing in the world that could replace the beauty of fresh flowers in tasteful vases. Those huge, artificial flowers in your home simply don’t belong there. Plus, there’s that downside of those fake flowers gathering dust in the long run so they can make a place look ugly.
Decluttering is not just applicable to fake flowers but to fake trees as well. Find, instead, those easy-to-grow indoor plants, place a bowl of colorful fruits on the table, or just display a vase of freshly-bought or picked flowers.
Faux flowers just won’t make your home look classy.
Apart from those fake stuff, you can also declutter by removing those stored, cheap glass vases inside your cupboard. Don’t hold on to them. Having three to four elegant vases would be better than keeping ten ugly vases.
‘Nough said.
Those Useless Knickknacks
Sure, accessories can add beauty and personality to your home but having a lot of knickknacks is not interior decorating – it’s hoarding. If you happen to have large collections of which you simply cannot bear to part with, then at least decide to rotate the pieces every now and then.
There is no rule that says you have to display all of your collections at once.
Again, don’t hold on to clutter. There are so many things that you can get rid of now which you think you might need but actually do not so go ahead and make that resolution now.
