From Vacant to Cozy – 5 Winning Techniques to Turn Your House Into a Home

Wednesday, October 25th, 2017

If you’re already thinking that you need to sacrifice comfort in order to achieve a high sense of fashion, think again. Inviting furniture and plush carpeting aren’t the only elements that can turn your house into a warm, welcoming home.

Choose Welcoming Colors

Colors can link a lot of interior design elements. You can have an eclectic, traditional or a contemporary house but beauty of all these boils down to how intelligently you chose the color palette.

The leading color palettes at the moment include turquoise, yellow-green, and jade green. Of course, you can always use the color that makes your heart flutter or you can rely on the reliability of neutrals.

Neutral colors are not just welcoming, they are also the best backdrop for living rooms. Just imagine fusing delicious shades of brown with muted greens and reds. This mixture of colors is perfect for a calming yet still interesting atmosphere.

Mix and Match

Forget your styling inhibitions for now. Instead, mix and match colors, patterns, textures, and styles. Find out how contrast can help you create depth into your space. Just picture a living room in which everything is covered in the same material and color – none could be more visually boring, right?

Patterns, on the other hand, are your best friends when you want to mix and match. Combine prints that have a common hue or thread. This is so the room can still have cohesive appeal.

Adding texture, on the other hand, means you add visual weight to a room. Rough textures are weightier so they tend to look more comfortable than the sleek, smooth ones.

The refreshing punch of green is where the eyes are drawn to in this mainly neutral bedroom. Featured piece is the upcoming Hooker Furniture Bedroom Boheme Laurier Queen Panel Bed.

Invite Nature In

There are many simple ways that you can bring in the greeneries or Mother Nature to your home. You can always begin with shopping for water features such as an aquarium or a small fountain. Water fountains are relaxing to the senses plus they are wonderful accessories.

Add some freshly-cut flowers inside beautiful glass or ceramic vases. Just make sure to keep the greeneries fresh by changing the water daily.

Be An Artist

This is your domain so be proud of your artwork. Rather than have a house that’s full of white, blank walls, it would be better to have a bold statement piece right on one of these walls.

Your art piece – whether made by you or another artist – can reinforce the color scheme that you have chosen.

At times, adding a single artwork is the sole answer to your decorating problems, at times, it could mean creating a gallery of artworks to arrive at a common theme. If you choose to have just a single statement piece, then be sure to frame this with neutral elements.

Be able to coordinate the artworks on the nearby walls. Know which pictures go together by picking artworks that have similar color schemes. It would also be helpful to find paintings and other artworks that have a similar style or theme.

A black and white color fusion could also be the right palette to coordinate all artworks in a room.

Be Spontaneous

Spontaneity can create an immediate change in scenery. It also means being able to work with the materials that you have in hand. Or it could also mean buying the right sets of furniture after suffering through the pieces that don’t match.

While a great part of interior design is planning, this doesn’t mean that you let go of being spontaneous. Being the latter means picking the elements that matter from the thousands of parameters that are given to you.

Spontaneity means you can breathe life to your environment using your personality, emotions, and the materials that you’re given.

The ABCs of Home Creation

Tuesday, September 12th, 2017

The Cynthia Rowley Brando Ottoman is nestled in this chiefly white living area.

Whether you’re building from scratch or are renovating a standing structure, the creation of a home can either be a painstaking or joyful task. The main difference lies in whether or not you know what you’re going to go through. This is now the right moment to know what you really want, who you are, and who the people are that you’re going to live with.

The building up of a new home is more than just defining the number of bedrooms or bathrooms. And just like any endeavor, you need to do ample research and planning in order to do things correctly. Without a doubt, you can never do this project on your own. You will need the help of a few professionals to make this task a more enjoyable and enriching one.

Plan and Set Goals

This project is all about setting goals and keeping them. Here is when you will compute the approximate cost and when you need to make plans A and B, even a plan C.

Going back on the budget, you need to be honest about what you can afford. Remember about your other plans for the future so don’t splurge all of your money now only to be left with just a beautiful house and nothing more in the end.

Include the land cost, taxes, and local fees, as well as the engineering and architectural fees. Consider also how much you will spend for landscaping and interior design.

Create a spreadsheet (e.g. Excel) in developing your budget. This will serve as your guide so that you won’t change your mind each time you see something better.

Create Your Winning Team

Again, you won’t be able to do this project successfully on your own. Create a team of experienced professionals – an architect (who can also be the builder), engineer, and other team members. Find also a reputable electrician, landscape artist, and an interior designer.

Featured here is the Harbor Springs Port Panel King Bed. Its rustic beauty is solidified by the equally traditional and rustic furnishings, flooring, and grayish-blue walls.

Declutter

This is one of the most important things to do after building the structure. Furnishings can contribute to a cluttered space especially when you have a lot of them. Leave or invest only in furniture pieces that you need. Group the furniture pieces according to their use or the rooms where they’re supposed to go in. Pretty soon, you’ll have an idea on what pieces should be thrown.

If you’re renovating, find out which of your stuff you no longer need. Give them away or sell them. Fill trash bags with items that have remained unnoticed for six months or more.

If, however, this is your new home, then check that the contractor has gotten rid of the rubbles or debris.

From a House to a Home

There is a huge difference between a house and a home. The former is just the structure where you live in while the latter is where you get your mental as well as emotional support. This is where you look forward to rush to after a long, arduous day at work.

The creation of a refuge means setting up a zero-stress zone. To do this, take a deep breath and roll your sleeves because you’re about to go to work.

Use the rooms. This is a no-brainer, right? Yet too many people forget this. They fill up their houses with the most expensive, glamorous stuff, only to end up being photographed but not lived in.

Make it a point to fill the house with the laughter of your loved ones. Enjoy your home. When you do this, you are building memories as you dwell in your home for many, many years more.

Straight Out of a Magazine – Tips on How to Stylize Your Home Like a Pro

Knowing how to achieve the right balance between coziness, functionality and style can be hard to achieve when you are out to design your home. No matter how much you spend on decent furniture, you could end up with a blah-looking room if you don’t know how to properly use these pieces. Achieving the magazine-like look of a living room or a bedroom is not an easy task but this does not mean that you won’t be able to achieve it.

At times, the scenario can be solved with the use of just a few tricks that would only require a few minutes. See how you could benefit from the following tips –

The Front Door Must be Pretty

It is important to create a first impression for your home. And what’s the first thing that your guests see when they visit you? Don’t overlook your home’s front door since this will be the first indicator that there is more to see inside.

Place something to beautify your front door. It needn’t be lavish, it could be as simple as a seasonal wreath or a door décor. You could also update your front door with a simple house number sign.

Plants are also a great idea but make sure that you arrange for them to still get ample sunlight and water.

Use the rule of three when styling or decorating. Display a trio to visually balance your space. Bring a little variety with the sizes, materials and height where you hang your stuff.

Begin also by decorating a corner or table then use the same concept throughout your home. Make sure that you don’t overdo it, though.

Design with Books

Whoever thought that book stacking can become a technique in decorating your home? Veer away from the usual vertically stacking, though. Try experimenting by having slightly-tilted stacks for a change. Alternative stacking is also best executed when you alternate between horizontal and vertical piles on shelves. Horizontal stacking effectively breaks the pattern of vertical lines, plus they create visual interest.

Be sure to create a random rhythm so that what you have is something that’s easy on the eye.

Showcase Conversation Pieces

Take great caution in displaying your collections and other objects that are dear to you. To get people’s attention, make sure the conversation pieces are able to stand out from the backdrop. This means you should only display items that have the power to draw the eye.

Find memory-related pieces, even random pictures to beautify your place.

Other Decorative Items

Branches and greenery are also excellent ways to enhance spaces. They are also capable of giving dimension to smaller homes. Even a simple vase filled with flowers or branches can already beautifully decorate a counter or a coffee table.

Bathroom necessities such as candles, corral perfumes and bud vases can be used to decorate trays.

Colorful and decorative tea towels are also an effective way to inject a little personality to the kitchen. Leave them on the countertops or just drape them over the sink’s side.

An imperfect collection of throw pillows can be used to decorate settees and sofas. Don’t keep them in a perfect lineup as they tend to look staged. For a more lived-in appeal, have different sizes, textures and shapes of decorative pillows sit on your favorite seating pieces.

Declutter your kitchen and other rooms in your home by using a basket as a storage piece. Store your oven toaster, the Panini maker, even the rice cooker in decorative, rustic baskets with rope handles to boost.

Lastly, be able to add contrast to your décor by putting cool tones where warm colors reign supreme and vice versa. A bouquet of hot pink flowers could be the perfect contrast to a yellow room. Identify the colors that will make the guests say wow.
