Uttermost Lamps and Lighting Arborea Glass Mini Pendant 22006

Pendant lamps – the animal fat in clay pot with wick types – date all the way back to Ancient Greece. There are a lot of changes since then and in this modern era, starting from the middle of the century, industrial type fixtures have started to appear.

Pendant fixtures are now a popular option for lighting many different rooms. You can make them work to your advantage if you learn a few guidelines.

Pendant Over a Table

The minimum height for the pendant light to dangle beautifully above a table is at 28-32 inches. You can adjust according to your preference but be mindful of the size of the fixture and the height of your ceiling.

It’s up to you to assign the role for your pendant light whether it’s going to be ambient or task light.

A big drum pendant lighting hanging over the table is able to anchor a vignette. With dimmers, it can also provide brighter lighting for day tasks such as finishing an assignment.

You can also hang multiple pendants above your rectangular table so the entire surface can be illuminated and also for aesthetics purpose.

Pendant in the Hallway

You can also hang pendants on the hallway or in the entryway. These lighting fixtures add drama and charm to those spaces. They cast interesting shadows while also providing illumination.

Where you need to light tall ceilings, be sure to hang the pendants at the right height. Hanging them high up could only lead to a confusing room. For lower ceilings, just use flush-mount lighting.

As for the hall, you have the choice to hang a series of like fixtures. This is a classic lighting technique that will provide a traditional look to your home. Keep the height at 8 feet so that there is ample clearance from the ceiling down to the floor.

Note also the doors and how they are opened. Make sure that there is ample clearance.

Pendants on the Stairwell

Pendant lights can also be hung in your stairwell. These will serve as a sculptural element in that area while providing the needed illumination.

Remember to hang the pendant light at a height that provides sufficient clearance for when you walk up or down the stairs. There must be no less than 18 to 24 inches of clearance. If there are tall family members, then make sure to adjust accordingly.

Pendant Above the Island

When you’re considering installing pendant light in the kitchen, then the best spot to put it is right above your beautiful kitchen island. This is an awesome way to provide ample task light while also enhancing your kitchen’s style.

The typical height for pendants is at 28 to 34 inches right above the countertop. Coming from the floor, there should be 72 inches, at the very least.

Yet another tip in hanging pendants above the peninsula or island is to hang them high enough so that you won’t be staring at lights when you’re standing.

Pendants at the Center and the Side

Pendant lighting is also beautiful when placed in the middle of a room such as in the case of the light above the coffee table. This will create drama while also being functional. Make sure that people won’t have to stoop just to walk under the pendant light.

Pendant lights can also be used by the side of a bed; instead of the usual bedside lamps, try these for a change. This is an effective way to illuminate the area especially in a room where there’s limited lighting.

Pendant in the Bathroom

The pendant light can also be used inside this room where it can replace the traditional sconces. Remember the basic rule which is to keep the lighting high enough so that you won’t hit it when you’re standing.

Pendant lighting fixtures have been around for many years but to think that they are just decorative elements is limiting them to just one role. There are many ways that you can spice up your home using this type of lighting fixture. And more often than not, the results are far too astounding to imagine.

Pendant lamps have been around since the time of the Ancient Greeks. Animal fats together with perfumes had wicks and then placed inside clay pots.

Pendant Light in the Kitchen

People are naturally drawn to light. And it is in layering, the drama that makes lighting more interesting to the human vision.

There isn’t one kind of light that can serve as the correct light for the entire kitchen. The different kinds of light have their own roles to play. The task light, for instance, can be used to illuminate the work areas such as the kitchen island as well as the pantry closet.

Decorative lighting, on the other hand, is your kitchen lighting eye candy. This is the one that adds visual interest to the kitchen. It can be the chandelier or the wall sconces that look like candelabra, or it can be your beautiful pendant lighting fixture.

Kitchen accent lighting can give depth. These are those recessed lights that you can add to create a visual drama even for a busy place such as the kitchen.

Pendant Lighting in the Bedroom

Picking the right bedroom lighting can be both challenging and fun. There is also a wide range of bedroom lighting which all have their own advantages. It’s up to you to get the style and the type of illumination that would make your bedroom more restful.

The size of the pendant lighting matters. You might be tempted to lead the light away from the bed – don’t. You can hang the pendant lighting – that is proportional to the size of the room, of course – right on the ceiling directly on the middle of the bed.

Make sure that your pendant light also enhances the theme that you have chosen for the bedroom. ‘Want a cascading chandelier for this room? That’s fine, too.

Pendant Fixture in the Living Room

It is crucial to properly light the living room because it is a hub of family activities. So what happens in your living room? You can use all three types – general, task, and accent.

General lighting could be as simple as natural light during the day. Overhead lighting is also important during the night. If you like watching TV in the living room, then use surrounding lights that won’t cause glare.

Accent lighting in the living room could be low-level lamps and floor lamps. Cozy it up with some pendant lights that match the theme of that space.

Pendant Lighting in the Dining Room

Just like the kitchen and the living room, the dining room is also a busy part of a home. And this is also one of the most interesting rooms that you can decorate. Here, you can definitely play with the different shapes of pendant lighting.

You can hang round pendants in place of the usual crystal chandeliers. You see, pendant lighting is as flexible as dining room lighting could go. Multiple pendants could even provide this room the needful complementary element for the rest of the design.

In picking your pendant light for this room, make sure that it is no less than 12 inches smaller than the dining table that you have set. The linear suspension should be about 1/3 to 2/3 of the table’s length and about 30 inches from its surface.

There are three wires that are commonly visible, two of these are for power, while the third wire is for electrical ground. Be sure to remove any mounting brackets installed in the past.

Next, using a screwdriver, attach the bracket which came with your lighting, to the box. Use the screws provided by the manufacturer. Check that the bracket is snugly installed.

Step 4 is to check the height and adjust it so that you are able to hang, release, and then pull the cord through the provided cover. Set your desired length. The excess cord should be cut with a wire cutter or left with the excess concealed behind the mounted cover.  The height that you set is your preference.

Step 5 is to attach the grounding wire to the mounting bracket. Be sure to twist the wires’ bare ends then cap with wire nuts. Affix the cover then tighten till it rests firmly on the ceiling. Make sure no wires are exposed.

Slide the threads then replace the nut to secure the fixture. Just check, if released, that the pendant lighting hangs at a level that suits the room. Last, select a bulb according to your mood preference.

Craftsman dwellings were inspired by architect brothers Henry Mather Greene and Charles Sumner Greene. These ingenious minds worked together during the 20th century in Pasadena, California. The Greenes were quite inspired by the English arts and crafts movement and Oriental architecture. In their own promoting handmade stuff rather than those created inside factories and were machine-made.

If you want to have a first-hand look at the beauty of craftsman design and architecture, you could visit Southern California where a few bungalows from 1905 till the 1920s still stand. You will surely love this style if you like things that may be old but have got a timeless appeal.

Characteristics to look for include gabled roofs, front porch, tapered columns, partly paned doors, multi-pane windows, and a lot of earthy colors.

Craftsman houses are typically painted in any nature-inspired color. You will see a lot of browns and greens. The low-profile homes often blend with their natural surroundings. The muted palette comprising of just one or two contrasting colors are used to highlight the breathtaking architectural features.

Regardless of the style that you choose for your home, keep in mind that painting an architectural feature with a contrasting color is an effective way to highlight such feature.

Another characteristic that is unique to a craftsman home is the stone detailing. See the mixture of different materials with the siding typically made of wooden clapboard. There are some that feature shingled siding as this was a pretty common style, too, back in the day. The foundations and porch piers are generally made of stone with some concrete block, bricks or stucco used at times.

Craftsman style also comes with roof eaves, exposed beams and rafter tails. All these reflect the influence made by the Arts and Crafts movement, thus, visible handiwork was featured and were considered in style.

Democratic Mixing

Get a craftsman style book and mix materials that you can get your hands on. Think of cladding a little addition of brick or stone even when your home already has existing clapboard siding. The addition of exposed rafter tails or beams should not mean that you are supposed to reconstruct your home or even replace your roof. Such details are commonly decorative in nature and can be easily added below a home that already has deep roof eaves.

There is something inviting and warm about a craftsman home. It celebrates the fusion of building materials, lovely structures, and most especially, the 20th century architectural features.

So, how to begin?

Start with a view of some of the craftsman homes still in existence. Take note of the window detailing, those exposed rafters, the facade, stained glasses as decorative accents, and the overall warm glow of the place.

Consider also the kind of lighting used which mirror the exteriors. Find sconce and pendant lighting that will cast a warm, golden glow throughout a room. While this is the general rule when it comes to craftsman homes (warm lighting plus earthy colors), this does not mean that you can’t put your own personality into it. You can opt for the bright home approach where you balance the bright hues with the wooden accents which are the staple materials of a craftsman home.

Other colors that you can add to your palette are white and blue. Gray can also give your craftsman home a contemporary appeal. Include white wooden accent pieces, modern pendant lighting fixtures, and some contemporary art. The result is a comfortable and trimmed yet modern and posh at the same time.

Isn’t it fun to make historical homes appear modern inside? This can be your take on retro meets the contemporary look.Craftsman design is sure to captivate both young and old spectators.
