If you ever stayed or lived in an apartment where you weren’t allowed to paint walls, then you do understand how difficult it can get to become creative. You could only dream of personality and warmth for the room because a painting job simply can’t happen.
If you’re faced with this dilemma, then you have to think of creative ways to cover the walls. Sure, decorating minus paint can be a real challenge but you should not default straightaway to sterile, cold colors like white or beige. Never allow the no-paint rule to make your home look pale or stark.
Here are some tips that can help you decorate the walls with style –
Wall Graphics
These are fantastic things that can aid in your customization of the walls. They are quite easy to apply and remove. No matter what your style is, you will find that wall graphics can make plain walls appear seemingly intricately painted. You can also create the look of a mural.
The great news about wall graphics is that they are not just limited to bare walls in living rooms. You can also spruce up your kitchen cabinets or make the lampshade more exciting. This means that you can use wall graphics if your taste is contemporary, country, or practically anything else. You can even use them if you love everything that’s Zen.
Wall graphics are also available as blackboards which are quite in these days especially inside kitchens.
Temp Wallpaper
This is also referred to as the peelable or strippable wallpaper. It is a decorative accent that works pretty much like the usual wallpaper but the only difference is that it peels away easily and it won’t even leave any residue.
Temporary wallpaper is available in DIY shops and stores and home depots. It is also available in paint shops and online sites. The downside is that they are a bit more expensive. You have to pay about $100 for every eight foot tall, 25-inch width of temporary wallpaper. You can cut down on the cost if you use this wallpaper on an accent wall instead of covering the entire room.
Peel and Stick Tiles
Adding a temporary color to the kitchen is as easy as buying peel and stick tiles. Do this if you’re tired of your kitchen’s current backsplash. These tiles are available in many colors and styles. You can buy them from home improvement shops.
Use scissors or a utility knife to cut them up. They can be easily cleaned using a soft cloth. They also peel off easily and don’t leave any residue once you decide to redecorate or move out.
Curtains
Having curtains doesn’t automatically mean that there should be a window behind it. Use an ordinary curtain rod and attach it to the wall right near the ceiling. Hang the coolest fabric that you can find, the type that reaches down to the floor to achieve an illusion of height.
Fabric
There are two options for fabric – this can be stretched right over the wall or it can be secured using small nails or thumbtacks. You can also buy foam boards that are as high as the walls. Have them covered with fabric then attach the boards onto the walls.
Whichever you end up choosing, adding splashes of colors on the walls is easy without you altering anything permanently.
Hang Art (Whether Yours or Another’s)
It’s time to get creative. Invest in huge canvasses then paint! You can also buy inexpensive pictures from stores and make a collage. This is a surefire way to decorate the walls and make them look unique. Hang the heavier artworks on a stud and not directly on the drywall.

‘Thinking of displaying old and memorable family photographs onto your walls? There is no easy way in doing that. Pictures that have been taken during varying occasions in people’s lives using different cameras are a great way to liven up walls. Different kinds of technology pose different challenges when it comes to posting them.
Family photographs, having come from different eras often do not match. Some photos could still be in black and white while most could already be in color. There is also the added task of framing the photos in ways that would emphasize their beauty.
How – exactly – would you frame and eventually display photos in style?
Plan
Family photographs must be enjoyed at eye level. So go ahead and take a pencil and mark the spots where you are supposed to hang the photographs. Use painter’s tape if you need a more visible approach in marking the walls. For some, this could even be used to make the photographs stick to the wall.Just as you would any endeavor, you must plan your photo arrangements. Who would want to punch a multitude of nails into the walls, right? If you are still renting, then your landlord will surely thank you for taking care of the walls.
You must also decide which walls will become the informal photo gallery. Of course, you can’t just pepper the walls with uncoordinated photographs so decide which wall you would use from the onset. Hallways, stairways and bedrooms are popular areas.
Decide also whether you would want the photographs to be hung symmetrically or asymmetrically. Whichever you choose, there should always be a unified look for all the photographs.
Create a Story
When planning on how to display the family photos on your walls, consider telling a story. We may already be living on the digital era but we still want to display the things representing people whom we love most.
The family photographs could turn a sterile wall into something more welcoming. Tell that story when you went on your first trip to Paris. Hang those right in the middle of the living room. When in the kitchen, consider displaying the photographs of the whole family eating at a seafood restaurant.
Be imaginative. You can have this as a DIY weekend project for the entire family or you could choose to hire a professional. You may think that it’s too much to hire a professional just to hang old family photos but – keep in mind that – putting up framed photos haphazardly on your walls is just like allowing junk to be displayed.
Family photographs have to be coordinated whether by story, color, size or pattern. Even an asymmetrical display will look nice when there is a single concept that unifies all of the framed memories. And who says one can’t use an abstract concept in hanging photos on walls?
How about using time-tested concepts in displaying memories? Sometimes, hanging pictures is as easy as using cool thumbtacks to affix the photos right onto the walls. The colorful thumbtacks could even become a part of the art.
Hanging vintage frames is best done by having them at an equal distance from each other. If you already have a wide variety of photo frames or have collected a good number of professionally-framed ones, then have them hung artistically, meaning, it’s up to you if you want them perfectly aligned or unbalanced. Art, after all, depends on the perception of its creator.
Add or Swap
Your family might have a great collection of memorable photographs now but your history isn’t finished yet. More occasions will be celebrated and more family members will be added. As your family grows and even changes, keep adding or swapping the photos on the walls.

There is nothing more expressive when it comes to designing a home than the use of art. Art accessory comes in many forms but one of its most beautiful forms is a painting. Vibrant colors and rich textures can be infused with other design elements.
There are many media and styles featured in famous paintings, even repros. It is easy to find some pieces that can match your chosen theme and also your personality.
Watercolor paintings work best in achieving a softer look. This medium shows multiple layers of color ranging from abstract to life-like. For added contrast and detailed shading, find oil or acrylic paintings. These, on the other hand, feature mixed colors in various textures.
Painting History
The history of this art medium goes back a long way. Every style is born from the one that came ahead of it. Each artist also adds to the achievements of the early painters and is able to influence the next generation of painters.
Paintings can be enjoyed for their sheer beauty alone. But for the keen eye, their colors, forms, lines and composition appeal to every sense. Paintings can even leave lasting impressions.
The enjoyment of paintings is not the sole purpose of this kind of art. It can be used to convey a deeper message than mere beauty. It can express the artist’s impression of persons and scenes, even events. Feelings can also be described with the use of paintings. Viewers may or may not feel that emotions that are being conveyed by the artist. One needs a discerning eye for art in order to appreciate such things.
Painting history can be encapsulated in these periods –
Man has gone a long way from the time when paintings were colored animal drawings inside caves. Cave dwellers were the first known painters, with their work found inside the caves of Spain and southern France.
Even back then, these cave artists knew that they needed vibrant colors to depict their lives back then. The famous painting of the wounded bison is still in the cave of Altamira in Spain today. While basic tools were used in the beginning, eventually, man learned to accumulate more materials and even learned techniques that improved his artwork.
You may not be able to take home an original Picasso, Monet or Michelangelo but there are still a lot of amazing paintings to go around. These days, the canvas can be the home for odd shapes, mere triangles, circles or rectangles in your sight but their bright colors and geometric patterns definitely mean something. It may even be difficult to distinguish between sculptures and paintings these days but the purity of hues and the shapes’ relationships are still there.
Artwork, as previously mentioned, comes in many forms. Clients are most familiar with the type that they can hang on walls inside their homes or offices. The next renowned pieces are tabletop artwork and sculptures.
Don’t get confused in choosing which medium you’d bring to your home or office. Just remember to show your personality through your chosen painting. Regardless of form, your taste and style should be reflected throughout the medium.
If you were a born optimist then it shouldn’t be a surprise to find brightly-colored paintings in your home. Black and white is for the stoic ones. What you have chosen based on your personality is a surefire validation that you have selected the right piece. Your art accessory is a representation of you so kudos!
