It is difficult to imagine a kitchen these days that do not have a type of bar stool. The bar stool is an awesome kitchen piece and it is so for a lot of good reasons. This allows family and friends, even strangers to converge in the kitchen.

What’s New?

Before we go to the more complex aspects of the bar stool, there is a need to learn the basic – its height. There is a lot of ongoing confusion with regard this topic so it’s time to clear it all up.

The bar stool refers to a seating unit with three fundamental heights – bar, counter and spectator (also referred to as stadium). Counter stools are manufactured to be together with standard-height counters. This is about 36 inches in height. The counter stool, therefore, should be about 24 to 26 inches.

Bar stools were designed to be used at a part of a kitchen counter that’s stepped up. The bar-height stool are the commonly used pair for the pub table. The seat height is usually 30 inches.

Stadium stool is the tallest since they are designed for tables that are 48 inches tall. The seat height is, therefore, at 34 to 36 inches. This kind of stool is used where extra height is required.

All these heights are great till you decide to move. Imagine dragging bar stools to a home that has an existing 48-inch counter. The furniture making industry has long figured this out. There are now adjustable bar stools in the market. These stools are the one-size-fits-all types so changing from taller to shorter stool is now possible in just a few minutes.

There are also swivel stools that are now very, very hot. Stools can be quite heavy so having a swivel chair saves you the effort and energy in pulling to or turning away from the counter. Another hot look to have for your bar stool is the brushed stainless steel. It has worked well for many homes just like chrome. The former is more suitable for a contemporary setting, though. Chrome, on the other hand, for those who choose a traditional look.

You can also mix and match different bar stools. It is now okay to mix chrome with walnut bar stools. For those who love a more traditional look, you can always go for vintage industrial. These stools mix styles and materials so you can have a wider selection for your home.

In terms of comfort, this depends on personal your personal taste. You should also consider other factors, though, like if the stools are going to be used by children or seniors. Backless stools are best for places with limited space. These also look great with a minimalist setting but be cautious because such stools can be disadvantageous for older adults.

If you want the bar stools to be more comfortable, then you can use tie-on cushions. These are not just for comfort but can also serve as statement pieces.

Still about comfort, there are also bar stools with arm chairs. The arms are great for providing comfort. If you have the swivel type for an armchair, just make sure that your kids don’t bang them on the counter or you would end up with a bashed furniture.

‘Want to raise the level of comfort? Then have a bar stool with foot rest. These are also critical for comfort especially among the elderly. After all, which do you prefer to sit on – a bar stool that lets your legs dangle or one that supports your feet up?

Finding the unique bar stool for your kitchen is a tough challenge. No matter what your end decision is, just consider height, materials, cost, upholstery, and your family members when buying and you should be fine.
