Rug Artwork – Appreciating Carpets and Rugs at a Whole New Level

Do you have a family heirloom rug that you have been aching to display but you do not want to wear and tear? Or maybe you have a carpet that you acquired from your travels that you now want everyone to enjoy.

The rug or carpet as an artwork or wall hanging is a beautiful and unique idea that not a lot of people are willing to go through but it is an idea that’s worth trying.

There are various ways to hang that carpet or rug on the wall. Whatever method you choose is dependent on the weight as well as the size of the rug. The location and your personal preference will also affect the rug installation.

Hang with Velcro

The first method that you can use to hang an area rug is through the use of Velcro. This is a method that is preferred by most museums. The Textile Museum displays its rugs successfully using this simple method.

The Velcro consists of two strips called the loop tape and the hook tape. The rough part is called the hook tape while the look is that soft, fuzzy part.

When you’re using Velcro, be sure to sew the back part of the rug onto the loop tape. This should be sewn through the whole top edge. If you’re hanging a high-value or heirloom rug, then you should use a strip of unbleached, plain canvas or muslin that’s wider than the Velcro strip used. This will prevent any damage to the rug when it comes in contact with the Velcro or other rough materials.

After stitching the Velcro loop tape onto the muslin strip, sew the muslin to your area rug. A handmade rug must also have a hand-sewn muslin. Use nothing but a whip stitch so that no damage would occur on the rug.

Hiding the stitching is as easy as using a heavy cotton thread that has a color that closely resembles that of the rug. Be sure to carefully tread the needle between the fibers.

When you’re ready to attach it to the wall, the hook tape can then be stapled to a thin piece of wood which comes in the same width as the area rug that you’re about to hang. You can then mount this piece of wood to the wall. Use two Velcro strips can then be connected.

Just check that the untreated wood won’t touch any part of the rug as this will cause damage. This is why canvas or muslin must be used as an outline so that the wood will be sealed.

For bigger and heavier rugs, just repeat this process, making sure that there are about 3-4 strips of wood that are vertically stacked every few feet. These will help support the weight of the area rug.

Hang with a Curtain Rod

The second method requires a curtain rod. Just sew a cotton casing right on the back of the area rug. Be sure to do this by hand. Form a tube so that the curtain rod may be inserted there. You can then mount the rod onto the brackets which you set up on the wall.

Make sure that the rod is strong enough to provide the necessary support that the area rug needs. For a decorative look, you can use a rod that extends to each edge of your area rug. You can use ornamental finials to cap your design.

Without regard to the method used, you must always remember these cardinal rules when hanging a rug or carpet –

Never hang it near a heat or electrical source.

Never pin or nailed to the wall as this will cause irreparable damage to the rug.

There are plenty of things that you can do to make your home stand out from the rest. You can clean up, declutter, and add unique furnishings. All these are obvious things that you need to do but have you thought of other techniques to shatter stereotyping for your home?

Check out these cool ways to make your home the newest enviable structure on your block –

A High-Gloss Door

If you want the dining room to become extra glamorous, then be ready to create changes. Many people think of candlelit dinners when an evening space is designed as posh. Have a custom high-gloss plum dining door installed. Don’t be boring, be bold.

Fuse Clashing Hues

There are many vivid colors to choose from. Combine the most exciting colors with unique patterns and what you achieve is a customized, bold statement for your home. Use fabric on walls, silk shade to lamps, even a leather door. Have your floor custom-painted. The sky’s the limit when it comes to using colors that seemingly compete.

Artsy Bed

Do not be afraid to use a huge bed inside a small bedroom. Just make sure that the piece you purchase is an open and airy one. This is so you won’t feel claustrophobic. Memorize the rule of thumb which is to have the top at no less than six inches from the ceiling.

To add impact, be sure to use dark wallpaper. If you want to highlight the new bed, though, then it would be best to use white walls.

A Grand Chair

Dramatize a chair by placing it in a way that it is the first thing that you will see once you enter the room. Provide an equally grand pair for it such as an interesting urn or a large vase. Pairing great looking pieces will also help the guests make sense of your design agenda. Use a chair in the same color palette as your current furniture so that it will be look at home.

The Peculiar Statue

Find a statue that’s less ceremonial than a bust and wittier than the common horse head. Have this statute show a bit of human anatomy and or any eye-catching feature. Make sure to place this piece in the most conspicuous spot such as the entryway or a living room side table.

If you’re conscious about this effort, then have a smaller version work as a bookend in one of your shelves.

A Unique Table Lamp

A task lamp isn’t just for task lighting. Make it a point to use a modern task light right on the side table by the corner. An arched lamp up above will surely be the sleek piece to a gold backdrop. Switch it on and you’d see how it will cast a romantic glow.

The Graphic Rug

What could be more non-stereotypical than a bold-patterned rug? Make this the surprise focal point in a room where the common central pieces are the furniture. If not, the rug can also be a great design element unifier so allow it to do its job.

Don’t worry about pattern overload, allow a solid coffee table to solve this issue for you.

The Modern Chandelier

The high-gloss door isn’t the end to something that’s shimmering. Adding the contemporary vibe of a chandelier will also make the dining room a must-see place. This is the kind of lighting that works best with dark frames and dark furnishings.

The glass element on the dining table echoes the bulbs and glimmering crystals of the chandelier up above.

It’s time to break away from what’s common. Use a thing or two from this list to make your home exceptional.

4 Timeless Living Room Trends

Hooker Furniture Living Room Cognac 4-Piece Sectional: What could be a more timeless look than leather?

Hooker Furniture Living Room Cognac 4-Piece Sectional: What could be a more timeless look than leather?

Living room trends come and go. If you’re looking for furniture styles that last no matter how much time has already passed, then you have to know what classic designs to look for. Being classic or timeless means a lot of things – it could be the finish, fabrics or size of the furniture that is being taken into consideration. These are those investment pieces which will be with you for the long haul. Even designers’ tastes may change over time but these classic interior styles will surely remain –

Barn Door

This unique living room piece has been making a comeback in the past, few years. The barn door looks great this season while also saving you a lot of floor space. This kind of door is the type that slides rather than opens inwards or outwards.

You may need more wall space to accommodate it but this is a more practical option for a small living room. The barn door is not just practical, it also adds to architectural interest in any vintage to modern living room space.

Barn doors are usually made of reclaimed wood but they have evolved significantly using different kinds of materials. Don’t worry about your barn door ever going out of style because they have been around for decades now.

Sectional

If you’re thinking that the sectional is a modern seating unit, then you’re clearly mistaken. Over the last hundred years, they have managed to seat more people than you can ever imagine.

These huge seating pieces are timeless when you religiously care for them. They are sure to last but the issue is whether or not you would stay in a big house for a long time. If, down the road, you do decide to downsize your dwelling place, then this furniture piece may no longer be a practical seat for you and your family.

Go ahead and invest in a sectional if you’re sure that you’re gonna be staying in a large home for quite a while.

Layered Rugs

This isn’t a new trend in the world of design. Layering rugs, especially the patterned and colorful ones, made of sisal or jute has long been used to create a Bohemian vibe in the living room. This technique has also become quite popular in many other interior design styles. In most cases, this is used when a big rug isn’t enough to cover a huge section of the living room.

Mixing different textures is also a reason why rug layering is done.

This look may not be your cup of tea if you think it looks complex and cluttered. To many others, rug layering is tantamount to showing off the most delicious patterns, textures and colors. This is also an effective tool to ground your living room space.

Rug layering is more effective when used in an open space layout. This is then used to define certain sections. It can also add personality, not just space definition. The great news is that there is not one look that is considered classic so go ahead and experiment.

Gallery Wall

But what’s a living room without that gallery wall? If you’re bored of the usual painted or wallpapered walls, then you’re one among many. A gallery wall could help snap you out of such boredom.

This wall is quickly growing in popularity over the past decade. It seems that every American home, these days, has one. This is one living room feature that is not about to go away very soon. Homeowners simply love to show off their prized paintings, art, and family photographs so there’s no stopping them in using this timeless trend.

Mix and Match: Carpet, Hardwood Floor, Area Rugs

One of the most difficult things to decide on when you become a homeowner is what kind of flooring you would have installed in your home. If you’re one of those who are clueless on where to begin, there are tips that can help you, not just in choosing your flooring material but also the carpeting that would go well with it –

Mix and Match

When deciding around flooring, it’s alright to mix up quite a bit. There is no need to stick to just a single texture. Smart mixes of various floorings can be an effective move.

High traffic areas such as the kitchen, hallways, and family rooms need hard products like laminates. Luxury areas have a different requirement. Bedrooms, lounge rooms and other such areas need carpeting.

Find floors that will complement each other. This is the key to making a functional and lovely living space. Find a tone that is suitable for your home and your preference. There are certain rules to follow, though, such as using warmer tones when your home has high ceilings.

Remember that warmer hues do not automatically mean darker tones. Balance the hard floor and carpet mixture by using the right pairings of hues. The tone and color of every floor should come from like color families. Never go into visual jarring.

Wooden floors and carpeting are never an either/or choice. A comfortable home needs a mixture of both. The floor should be able to withstand high traffic while showcasing your personality.

The designers of today prefer to use wood and carpet for utmost visual impact. None can offer a more striking look. Wood floor is an effective element that can tie different rooms together. It is beautiful, easy to clean, durable and elegant. It is also visually warm so it is easy to make your home feel more comfortable when you install it.

Get the most out of hardwood floors by knowing when to use light and dark colored wood. Lighter colors should be able to open up cramped spaces. Darker woods can create an intimate space out of an expansive area.

Be sure to pair hardwood flooring with unique area rugs or carpet.

Some Hardwood Floor No-No’s

  • Never match the colors of your wood floors with the wood cabinets.
  • Don’t use wood in high-traffic rooms.

Say Yes to Carpets

Carpets have a lot of benefits to offer. First, they are able to mute noise and are even able to keep your feet warm. Choose the right color and material so that you won’t have to clean and deodorize all the time.

Carpets are great to use inside bedrooms and living spaces. These are areas where warmth and comfort are most needed, hence, you can use ample carpeting there.

If you want to anchor furniture groupings, then use area rug and carpet duos. Be sure to highlight analogous textures and neutral hues.

Carpets are unwelcome in rooms where food is often prepared. They shouldn’t also be matched with other carpets in separate rooms so that there is a clear division of space and functionality.

How About Area Rugs?

Area rugs are more versatile than carpeting and hardwood flooring. These pair beautifully with tiles, carpet or wood, and just about any material that you could think of; they can also define spaces while enhancing the décor all around.

Area rugs can also protect the floor from wear, tear and dirt. Make sure that you choose the right size of rugs. Majority of rooms, including the bedroom, dining room and living room need no less than 8×10 foot rug. Breakfast nooks can make do with a 5×7.
