French doors are known for allowing privacy in homes and providing the best visual connection outdoors.  These often connect the patio to the living room of a home. They can also open out to the backyard patio or a deck and could be used with an efficient screen door system.

French doors are also found in between the kitchen and the dining room or the dining room and the living room. These doors become instrumental in providing ample light between these spaces. Sometimes, blinds and curtains are installed just as windows are provided with a relevant window treatment.

Did you notice that the most popular design is that of the divided-glass-panes type?

The French Door History

Believe it or not, French doors have been known to exist as early as the 17th century. They were most prominent during the end of the Renaissance period of architecture and art. It was during this period that the world was welcoming fresh ideas to be integrated into constructing structures. Architecture centered on regularity, symmetry, as well as proportion. But there was a constant demand for more light to be let into rooms.

This necessity brought about the birth of the separated glass panes which are now pretty prominent in all French doors. Having windows incorporated into doors allowed more light to pass through, thus, people then enjoyed light especially since this was an era before electricity was discovered.

Stylize with French Doors

Decorating with a French door means you are ready to show some style. You are not just showcasing the beauty of the interiors of your home, these doors could also add up to the lovely look of your home outdoors.

French doors come with small windows which are referred to as lights. These are all set to the full length of each door. These were not built to offer privacy but are there to bring more light into the home. They are also decorative.

French doors were made previously with wood and wrought iron. These were used for more for their stylizing functions. As time went by, more sturdy materials like aluminum and PVC were also used. These were used because they are lightweight in spite of being sturdy.

French Door Types

There are various kinds of French doors to choose from. The one style that you settle for should depend greatly on the concept or design that you have also chosen for your home.

The interior French doors were made to connect a room to the next one. In essence, these doors serve as wall partitions between the two rooms. An exterior French door, on the other hand, are exposed outdoors. These doors allow the sunlight to stream through the living room at all times during the day. These also enhance the beauty of the living room as natural light showcases the beauty of the furnishings.

Just make sure to have fabrics that can withstand the rays of the sun when you have this kind of French doors.

The pocket French doors slide into walls instead of opening using a traditional hinge. These allow for more space to be utilized inside a room. Whether you decide to use it in the living room, kitchen, or the dining room, you have a wonderful space-saver in pocket French doors.

The bi-fold French doors have 2-4 sections that automatically fold into pairs. These can open from the left or right. These are often used in indoor closets. The multi-fold French doors serve as hall or room dividers. They are mostly designed for spaces where a folding door is needed.

Lastly, the sliding French door is best for when you want to leave enough space in a room. These are great for balconies and patios.

Have you ever been invited to a sitting room? Did you know exactly where to go?

Consulting the dictionary will give you a synonymous meaning to both the sitting room and the living room – this isn’t exactly right, though. The sitting room in the olden days just did not transform into a living room.

Sitting Room vs. the Living Room

The living room is often the biggest room in a home. This is often adjacent to the dining room and could also be an extension to the main entrance.

A sitting room does not necessarily have to be the biggest room inside a house. In fact, it can be situated anywhere and it even serves more purpose if it is placed right next to the kitchen since it is the place where you and your family can relax after enjoying a meal prepared in the heart of your home.

You can play host and welcome guests into the living room. It is for this purpose that it is much like the dining room where you can socialize and entertain people. The living room has to have a sofa set that offers both elegance and comfort. Other furniture pieces that you should invest in are an armchair, a center table, a TV stand, perhaps even a coffee table.

Decorative items such as floor lamps, a portrait and artworks can be added according to your preferences.

As to the sitting room, you have the leeway to put in any kind of furniture that you want. It is a simple room in your home, sometimes it’s not even a room but just a section. Possible parts of a sitting room’s design are bookshelves, sound system, a fireplace, a desk and a chair, TV, and a small center table. The sitting room can be the venue for playing games, eating, surfing on the Internet, talking or just reading some good books. You can also listen to your favorite music in that section of your home.

The living room accent is a crucial part of the design. Whether you choose a formal or modern design, you have to consider harmonizing every single aspect of your design. As for the sitting room, all you need to worry about is the setup of things that you will need for your daily activities.

The living room paint color should be appropriate to your chosen design, accents, even the lighting.

Should the sitting room be located in the same room as your living room then be sure to fuse the design elements that you used for each section.

Sitting Room Design

The sitting room can look elegant even if it is lacking in square footage. In fact, you can make use of the limited space to bring in unique design elements such as French doors which can make the room appear more spacious. A trumeau right above the fireplace can offer the needful proportions as the eyes are drawn upwards. You don’t have to worry too much about adding a lot of decorative elements. A duo of floor lamps would do as are draperies that represent the pattern, texture and colors of your chosen theme.

If you happen to be blessed with woodworks in your sitting room, then you can bank on the warmth that they offer. Do not paint the fireplace or the panelled walls. Allow the richness of the wood grain and plush rug, even the colorful draperies to add drama.

Allow a little contrast on the light and dark elements in your sitting room. Focus on or highlight the architectural elegance that your sitting room might hold. Sophisticated architecture can also be simple.
